Data and assumptions

Current use

The pre-project has already collected information on present-day use of Westfjords coastal regions. The information was compiled at open meetings with residents and other stakeholders in November 2009. This data gives and indication of the interests of different groups and what areas are economically important. Further data will be sought from government agencies.

Natural conditions

The production of the utilisation plan needs to provide certain basic data as basis for policy. All available data must be compiled on biology, ecology and the physical characteristics of the area; such as tides, depth and oceanographic features. It is essential to pinpoint which areas are the most important. This importance could relate to particular sensitivities or unique features, for example.

Further analysis

Information on natural conditions and anthropogenic uses must be linked together. Information needs to be compiled on which areas are under particular stress and what the environmental effects of exploitation are. Similarly, information on the area‟s potential usability is also essential.

Current policy

Although the area does not currently fall under any coastal plan (areas outside of 115 metres below the high water mark) there are still several policy documents in existence on the use of this area. Examples of these policies can be found in the publications The Sea: the policy of the Icelandic government and Welfare for the future: sustainable development in Icelandic society – policy aims until 2020.

Laws and regulation

Six ministries cover ocean issues and many other seaborne issues indirectly affect other ministries as well. Consequently, a number of laws and regulations affecting the utilisation of coastal areas exist and must be taken into account in project work.
